Buffalo Recycling Alliance Tour a Recycling Plant

The Buffalo Recycling Alliance is organizing a tour of the Buffalo Recycling Enterprise plant in South Buffalo.  The tour will take place on Wednesday, November 7 at 3:30pm. Co-sponsored by City and State and the YWCA of Western New York. An evening of debates with candidates for the State Senate and Assembly. Participants included Assemblyman Sean Ryan, Erie Co. Legislator Betty Jean Grant, New York Sen. Timothy Kennedy, among other candidates from Assembly Districts 147 & 149.

Shakespearean Idol

PPG’s summer fundraisre, nine civic leaders competed for the prize of Shakespearean Idol before three all-star judges: Saul Elkin, the founder of Shakespeare in Delaware Park; Lorna Hill, the founder of Ujima Theatre; and Colin Dabkowski, arts critic at the Buffalo News.  Alexis Masani DeVeaux (author, SUNY Buffalo Professor) was crowned Shakespearean Idol while Mark Goldman (historian and entrepreneur) was the top audience vote-getter for the coveted “Groundlings’ Choice Award.”  Special guest Tim Newell offered a highlight from his acclaimed portrayal of the evil King Richard III in this past summer’s Shakespeare in Delaware Park production.

A Bright Legacy: Local Economic development for a Low-Carbon Future

Catherine Tumber, author of Small, Gritty, and Green: The Promises of America’s Smaller Industrial Cities in a Low Carbon World, outlined feasible means for these cities to be at the forefront of the new economy. Tumber asserts that rust belt cities can serve as models for sustainable urban living and are increasingly important geographic sites for ingenuity and innovation in the new economy. This was s the first event in the Get the Rust Out: Shining Examples for a New Economy speaker series in which the Western New York community has the opportunity to engage with leading experts on how to build a thriving regional economy, from the bottom up.

Candidate College

PPG, YWCA of WNY, New York Civic, City & State newspaper, and New York Policy Forum presented a Candidate College on June 16, 2012. The Candidate College is non-partisan and has no ideological litmus test to participate. It is meant to provide those interested in running for public office, or those interested in participating in a campaign in other ways, the knowledge they need to run.

    Poverty Research Workshop

    The third Buffalo Poverty Research Workshop offered everyone concerned with Buffalo’s poverty the chance to hear about new and ongoing research, promising strategies, and opportunities for collaboration.  The workshop is designed for local scholars, social service agencies, advocates, and government leaders and staff, among others.

    Susan Lerner, director of Common Cause NY, discussed the redistricting of the New York State legislature and offered the citizens’ alternative to gerrymandering. She demonstrated software that allowed any citizen to draw his or her own map and submit it for consideration.

The welcoming address was given by City Council Member and Senior Pastor of True Bethel Rev.Darius Pridgen, keynote by Dr. Deborah Puntenney of the ABCD Institute/Northwestern University.
