September Forum: Green Development Zone Walking Tour
The Massachusetts Avenue corridor of Buffalo’s West Side is fast becoming a national model for the green redevelopment of a challenged neighborhood. The “Extreme Makeover” house is just one facet of this remarkable “Green Makeover,” which recently won $500,000 in state funding. Join PUSH Buffalo co-founders Aaron Bartley and Eric Walker and Massachusetts Avenue Project’s Diane Picard for a walking tour to see the exciting progress made by PUSH, MAP, Homefront, and neighborhood residents, including:
PUSH’s “Net-Zero” home being renovated at 10 Winter Street. With geothermal heating, solar power, super-insulation, and other features, this house will produce all its own energy.
MAP’s Urban Farm and Greenhouse, with Buffalo’s first straw-bale greenhouse, a 1000-gallon rain water catchment system, and Buffalo’s first local aqua-ponics system.
A “walking menu” for green treatments of formerly vacant lots, including a tree farm, a community garden, a rain garden, and more.
Meet outside of MAP’s Urban Farm at 389 Massachusetts Avenue (between Brayton and Shields) at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, September 21, rain or shine. Walk-ins welcome, but if possible please RSVP to Megan Connelly, megan@ppgbuffalo.org, by Monday September 20.
